River as Memoir

River as Memoir, Exhibition of sumi brush and pen drawings and letterpress

February 20 - March 24, 2023
by CB SHERLOCK

Combining images and text, I create narratives.
This river has always been part of my life. I returned to this river each summer. I know this river. My spirit has grown deeper and stronger because of this river. My memories have become image in awe of the Yellowstone River. Rushing, dancing in the sun, always in the moment.

I am Home

Each summer we return to the place where my heart is deep rooted — in the river singing, the rocks looming and the grasses waving. As the distance shortens, my feelings elate, I radiate joy. I am back. The ache of being elsewhere is gone.  There is something exhilarating in the arc of the sky, the elevation felt beneath my feet, the air seen in distances not possible in other places; my senses kick in, acknowledging that I am home, maybe not for long, but long enough. Eyes focus on each diverse detail in the grasses drying in the August sun, turning from wet green to prairie gold.  This place is full of memories, mine and others, memories that have been shaped by land, its angles and curves, by the blisters on our feet, by our freezing toes in the rushing waters, by our lungs catching breath as we submerge in the river for the forty seconds they can endure. I belong to each trail, bridge and vista, with the enormous rocks roosting beside the path passed on the way to the lookout for lunch. Again. Memories layer like vast vistas, of photos taken, of tears from the little ones pushed farther than they wanted to go, of oranges peeled, and white quartz, spring green lichen, silver weathered branches picked up in awe. My body remembers. My senses rejoice, I am home. Again.

2022 Update

Codex Book Fair is the next item on the calendar, April 10-13. I will be at Table 18 with several books, at least two not seen at the last fair. Stop by is you are in Berkeley/Richmond, CA.
Manhattan Fine Press Book Fair is April 23. this is the East Coast event. I will be bringing several Accordion Press Edition Books, plus my artists’ book.

On May 7, there is an Open Studio 5:30-9:00. This is a chance to see where I am working, what I am creating and eat my great guacamole!

Next on the press are 9 Yellowstone shoreline prints. the foundation of each will be my ink drawings made after our trips to the river in 2020 and 2021.

I hope to see you at one of these events.

Book Arts Between the Lines

I am part of College of St Benedict and St John’s University Artists’ Book Collection. They asked me to participate in their artist book video series: Book Arts Between the Lines. In this series of videos, I talk about why I chose to work in the book arts.

2021 Update

It is a new year and with the start of the year I have two new projects available and a new studio.

Garden Remnants, three prints, an edition of 5. Each has a garden remnant, a hosta leaf in the yard from last year. It is attached to the paper using a chine colle´ technique and sealed with sizing. It is then letterpress printed with the remnants of the type from one of my earlier projects. It is housed in a portfolio with Mary Hark handmade paper on the inside.

The project currently on the press is A Day Elsewhere: Chateau Lareóle.  It consists of seven chine colle´prints from a perfect day of sketching on my trip to France in 2018. The text describes an artist captured in creativity and it is part of the opening paragraph from Le Bourse, one of Balzac's short stories. It will be housed in a pink leather bound clamshell box. I have started printed the images, the text is much quicker to print and will be next.

Blue is in SFBC exhibition Reclamation, a show that Codex Foundation has been working on about climate change.

At the start of 2021 I moved into a wonderful new studio space in Traffic Zone Center for the Arts. Thank you, Chip.

Seward Winter Frolic 2019

This past year I opened a new studio space in the Seward neighborhood.

For the first time, I will be participating in the neighborhood’s Art Crawl called the Seward Winter Frolic on December 7 & 8.

My studio will take part, and will include several artist friends exhibiting their work. A community of artists all share space in the building, and all are fabulous.
